Frontier(s) - what are your boundaries?
I am a big fan of horror movies, and it just came to my attention that a new one is about to hit (select) theatres on May 9th and DVD on May 13th. The movie, Frontier(s), is French and is said to be the French answer to Hostel and Saw - that should give you a good idea of what kind of horror movie this is. No, it won’t be dealing with ghosts and other supernatural beings and happenings. We’re talking blood and gore, and lots of it. The unrated version of the movie will run in theatres, which is quite rare - usually unrated versions are released strictly on DVD. It should be interesting to see what rating they will give it here in Norway - 18 (years) is the highest, but is hardly ever used.
In short, the movie is about a gang of thieves fleeing Paris after a political election that resulted in violence. They find an Inn to stay at, which is later discovered to be run by a “family” of Neo-Nazis with a taste for violence themselves… Like the Trailer says: For those on the run, there are fates worse than what you are running from.
Frontier(s) will probably be one of those movies that you either love or hate - love it if you are a fan of horror/gore, hate it if you feel that this kind of violence in movies is unnecessary. It is sure to create a bit of controversy in the world of movie lovers, and the debate about violence in media and entertainment, and how it affects the world and those in it, might see its renaissance (if you could say that it ever died down).
Will I go see the movie? Maybe. Will I cover my eyes during the worst scenes? Definitely.

Personally I don’t consider Saw and Hostel to be horror movies per se, but gore. There are no zombies, no ghosts, no crazy killers on the loose, etc. It’s just gore. Gore might be catalogued under the Horror genre though (I suspect), but in my personal opinon they depart from it.
I think that with the recent release of GTA, most media and politics will have their hands full with their violence complain, so I wouldn’t worry too much about controversy :P

I agree - it’s not “pure” horror, it’s a subgenre (at least I think gore sorts under horror).
And yes, of course, I forgot all about GTA. ;)
