Movie review: The Gathering Storm (2002)

The Gathering Storm
4 star rating | IMDB

Germany was arming itself for war. But they didn’t count on one man.

The Gathering Storm is a movie that tells the story before the story - Winston Churchill’s story in the time before the breakout of World War II and his ascent to First Lord of the Admiralty, later Prime Minister.

This was not a movie I had ever heard of, nor did it sport any known (to me) actors. What it did have going for itself though, was that it was a BBC production, and that, in my opinion, is always a sure stamp of excellence.

The Gathering Storm is no exception. It draws you in from the beginning, and keeps you glued to the screen, even though there is no action sequences, no intense suspense, no heart wrenching romance - it just tells its story. It also shows you a side of Winston Churchill that I bet not many people are familiar with - he’s actually portrayed as a bit of a grouchy, disagreeable man, but with an intensely soft spot for his wife, Clemmie.

The movie might be best suitable for people with an interest in history, or in the person Winston Churchill. I know for one that my husband would find it immensely boring, whereas I and my brother (who’s also a student of history) were both rather enthralled by the movie.

“Destiny is what I believe in. Destiny commands. We must obey.” -Winston Churchill
